HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) is a science based analytical tool, enabling a cost effective safety programme to be implemented. The introduction of HACCP into the animal feed industry has been ongoing since 1998,following the introduction of the Universal Feed Assurance Scheme (UFAS), which relies on HACCP based principles to ensure the safety of animal feed.

HACCP involves a systematic risk assessment of all of the many steps involved in animal feed manufacture, the identification of those that are critical for product safety, the introduction of controls and a monitoring mechanism to ensure compliance.

Staff training programmes have been set up for key staff to ensure implementation of a robust HACCP plan and also for mill staff, to provide awareness of responsibilities within the HACCP plan.

Animal feed compounders benefit from the implementation of a HACCP plan and key benefits may include:-

  • The implementation of a preventative programme to reduce product losses, product reworks and product recalls
  • A move from end product sampling and testing towards a preventative quality assurance programme
  • Supports a defence of ‘due diligence’, recognised now in much of the EU feed safety legislation
  • HACCP facilitates International trade
  • HACCP complies with legal requirements
